This includes material that is within the public domain and explains the process of getting a drug to market. The majority of the chapters include more worked examples/tutorial examples and the chapter on Analytical spectroscopy has been updated to include “qualitative” spectroscopic methods especially NMR, mass spectroscopy and some IR and the chapter on Stability of drugs and medicines has been updated to include a major section on “prodrugs” which are inactive compounds designed to decompose within the body to release the active moiety.

Summary: An Effective Introduction to Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Rating: 4

This is a very well written and organized introduction to pharmaceutical chemistry, and for a non-chemist is reasonably easy to follow, especially with definitions being complete and included when needed. Tutorial examples are very helpful. Overall, the content is instructional and practical. I can recomend this book especially to those not too familiar the subject matter.

Summary: lecturer from Australia
Rating: 5

I have read the book and will recommend it as the textbook for pharmacy students. It covers most relevant chemistry topics for pharmacists and does so in just the right amount of explanatory detail. The selection of topics is very good and the text does not assume that pharmacy undergraduates must learn all the topics which chemistry undergraduates do.
It is truly a well thought out applied chemistry text.

Product Description:

The impact society has on the progress and acceptance of new science - and vice versa - is greater than most people think. For instance, over the past five years, events indicate that citizens’ views have helped change the focus of the research and development carried out by both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and by the Environmental Protection Agency. Likewise, citizen actions have influenced the direction of the activities of organizations such as the World Bank in their efforts to improve agriculture and living conditions in the developing nations of the world. The new “Science and Society” set not only highlights the “what” of science, but also the “why,” the “how,” and the “who.” Each volume provides an accessible, authoritative view of the history and current state of a particular issue. With a focus on humanizing science, this set brings each subject - from air pollution to nuclear power to natural medicines - to life by showing students all the factors that motivate research and revealing how scientists compete and collaborate with one another. By exploring the connections between science and society, especially in controversial areas, each book illustrates both how society supports science and how science in return supports society. Each volume includes an introduction providing an overview of the topic, complete chapter-by-chapter coverage, dozens of black-and-white photographs and line illustrations, a helpful index and glossary, lists of websites and suggestions for further reading that allow readers quick access to detailed information.

The Merck Druggernaut: The Inside Story of a Pharmaceutical Giant
By Fran Hawthorne

Publisher: Wiley
Number Of Pages: 304
Publication Date: 2003-02-28
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0471228788
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780471228783

Product Description:

An in-depth look at big pharma’s flagship company
The Merck Druggernaut takes readers inside Merck, the world’s second most profitable drug company and maker of the world’s bestselling drug, Prilosec. Consistently named one of Fortune magazine’s Most Admired Companies, Merck struggles to maintain its reputation for being the most ethical of the big drug makers, refusing to slash research and development budgets in the face of declining profits, falling stock market prices, and questionable accounting. Author Fran Hawthorne, one of the leading journalists covering healthcare, has written an excellent examination of a business paragon with much-needed insight on the cutthroat world of pharmaceuticals. It’s a story that will interest the business world as well as consumer and healthcare advocates by detailing the vital issues in medicine and healthcare today. More than just a compelling story of success in a difficult industry, more than simply the biography of one of big business’s most recognizable names, The Merck Druggernaut takes a thoughtful look at some of the major issues of our time and the way those issues intertwine with the world of business.

Fran Hawthorne (New York, NY) is the Assistant Managing Editor at Crain’s New York Business. She has been covering business for more than twenty years for such publications as Fortune, BusinessWeek, and Institutional Investor, with a prevailing interest in healthcare and pharmaceuticals. At Crain’s, she spearheads the publication of two to three special healthcare issues per year.

Summary: good book on how pharmaceutical companies operate.
Rating: 3

the book is an eye opener for those who have no idea of how a pharmaceutical company operates. it is very detailed from the conception of a drug to its marketing. it praises and also hits the pharmaceutical industry.
well written and easy to understand. highly recommended.

Summary: A good reminder that not all pharma is evil
Rating: 5

Merck is one of the most honest drug companies in the world. Given their recent troubles with Vioxx it is good to have a book out there that reminds us of the good things they have done. Hawthorne as always is well written and does a great job of taking us from the founding with George Merck to the present day and the quest to create new drugs. It is an unbiased perspective that may make those who want to blame big Pharma for all of their ills. Highly recommend.

Summary: Pretty interesting book
Rating: 4

This book covers not only Merck, but also big pharma in general. I enjoyed reading the book, too bad that all the events post-Vioxx recall are mentioned only in the Epilogue.

Summary: Delivers the goods.
Rating: 4

This book was everything I hoped. Very well written, researched, and organized. I don’t know what more a reader could have wanted than what Hawthorne hath writ.

Unlike what other critics here seem to have assumed, the book is *not* an expose. In fact, Hawthorne indicates repeatedly that Merck’s employees and alumni are famously a tight-lipped bunch. In light of that, I think she did an outstanding job of lifting the veneer to peek into the company’s ethos, zeitgeist, and birthright.

The book does an admirable job of staying centered on Merck as the subject, rather than shifting to the drug industry as the star of the show and Merck but a player in it. Perhaps a couple of the middle chapters spent more time reversing these roles than I’d have liked, but sometimes that’s necessary when an industry sea change makes the company the object rather than the subject.

In all an excellent read, especially for someone (like me) who is considering a career in the industry.

Randy

Summary: Regurgitation of Merck’s PR handouts
Rating: 1

As an ex-Merck employee who was there during the stellar days of Roy Vagelos and has had to watch Ray Gilmartin and Peter Kim squander the legacy and the public trust of a once distinguished phramaceutical company, I take great exception to this trite, inaccurate “informmercial” of a book. The give away is the opening page - the Merck superman, not above fixing his own plumbing problems. Clark Kent where are you?
This book is pathetic - stealing directly from Merck’s circa 2000 PR materials. No mention of the great pharmacologists and medicinal chemistrs who set the stage for P. Roy’s success - Clem Stone, Karl Beyer, Ralph Hirschmann, Paul Anderson, Brad Clineschimdt - just the story post Roy - with a number of patheric legends in their own minds taking center stage and leading Merck straight into the COX-2 fiasco.
Merck once had great leadership, now it has Gilmartin’s Don Knotts to George Merck’s Andy Griffith.
This book is worthless

He says:
Oh sure, they say they’re busy. They say that they didn’t have even a moment in their insanely busy day to pick up the phone. It was just that crazy. All lies. With the advent of cell phones and speed dialing, it is almost impossible not to call you. Sometimes I call people from my pants pocket when I don’t even mean to. If I were into you, you would be the bright spot in my horribly busy day. Which would be a day that I would never be too busy to call you.

She says:
There is something great about knowing that my only job is to be as happy as I can be about my life, and feel as good as I can about myself, and to lead as full and eventful a life as I can, so that it doesn’t ever feel like I’m just waiting around for some guy to ask me out. And most importantly, it’s good for us all to remember that we don’t need to scheme and plot, or beg anyone to ask us out. We’re fantastic.
For ages women have come together over coffee, cocktails, or late-night phone chats to analyze the puzzling behavior of men.
He’s Just Not That Into You is provocative, hilarious, and, above all, intoxicatingly liberating. It deserves a place on every woman’s night table. It knows you’re a beautiful, smart, funny woman who deserves better. The next time you feel the need to start “figuring him out,” consider the glorious thought that maybe He’s just not that into you. And then set yourself loose to go find the one who is.

Mark Laaser, Debra Laaser

Mark Laaser, Debra Laaser, "The Seven Desires of Every Heart"
Zondervan | 2008 | ISBN: 0310278163 | 224 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

A deeper probe into relationships starts with our heart’s desires

At last, a “relationship book” that looks past what separates us to examine what connects us!

Dr. Mark and Debra Laaser go to the heart of the matter. Instead of focusing on how to sidestep or compensate for perceived differences, they dig deeper, to the core of our souls, to examine how the basic desires and needs of all people make us more alike than different.

The Seven Desires of Every Heart explores the common desires God gives you—to be heard, affirmed, blessed, safe, touched, chosen, and included. Using stories, Biblical references, and sound psychological principles, the Laasers explain each desire and show us how we seek it and what it feels like to have it truly fulfilled. You also will learn healthy ways to embody these desires in your relationships. You will be given the tools you need to start repairing and rebuilding relationships and developing new skills for creating emotional and spiritual intimacy.

Phillip Sigal

The Halakhah of Jesus of Nazareth according to the Gospel of Matthew
Publisher: Society of Biblical Literature | ISBN: 1589832825 | edition 2007 | PDF | 292 pages | 1,77 mb

This is a republished edition of Sigal's pioneering work with a new preface by Eugene Fisher of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and an updating epilogue by Thomas Kazen of the Stockholm School of Theology. Sigal argues that, from a halakhic perspective, Jesus teachings on Sabbath and divorce in the Gospel of Matthew use the same methods of interpretation as those of his proto-rabbinic contemporaries. The Jesus of the Gospel of Matthew should thus be seen as a charismatic prophetic first-century proto-rabbi independent in his halakhah and frequently anticipating later rabbinic positions rather than as transcending proto-rabbinic halakhah or as an adherent of a particular school. Sigal concludes that, had it not been for the expulsion of Christian Jews from the synagogues after 90 C.E., Jesus could have been remembered as one of the rabbis of the Mishnah and that neither Christology nor halakhah were decisive for the break.

Daughter Zion Talks Back to the Prophets: A Dialogic Theology of the Book of Lamentations
Publisher: Society of Biblical Literature | ISBN: 1589832477 | edition 2007 | PDF | 160 pages | 1,12 mb

Daughter Zion Talks Back to the Prophets offers a new theological reading of the book of Lamentations by putting the female voice of chapters 1-2 into dialogue with the divine voice of prophetic texts in which God represents the people Israel as his wife and indicts them/her for being unfaithful to him. In Lam 1-2 we hear the wife talk back, and from her words we get an entirely different picture of the conflict showcased through this marriage metaphor. Mandolfo thus presents a feminist challenge to biblical hegemony and patriarchy and reconstrues biblical authority to contribute to the theological concerns of a postcolonial world.

Damian Thompson

Damian Thompson, "Waiting for Antichrist: Charisma and Apocalypse in a Pentecostal Church"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2005 | ISBN: 0195178564 | 224 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

How can people believe that the supernatural end of the world lies just around the corner when, so far, every such prediction has been proved wrong? Some scholars argue that millenarians are psychologically disturbed; others maintain that their dreams of paradise on earth reflect a nascent political awareness. In this book Damian Thompson looks at the members of one religious group with a strong apocalyptic tradition - Kensington Temple, a large Pentecostal church in London - and attempts to understand how they reconcile doctrines of the end of the world with the demands of their everyday lives. He asks such questions as: Who is making the argument that the world is about to end, and on whose authority? How is it communicated? Which members are persuaded by it? What are the practical consequences for them? How do they rationalize their position? Based on extensive interviews as well as a survey of almost 3000 members, Thompson finds existing explanations of apocalyptic belief inadequate. Although much as been written about apocalyptic belief, Thompson's empirically-based study is unprecedented. It constitutes an important step forward in our understanding of this puzzling feature of contemporary religious life.

Anna Wierzbicka, "What Did Jesus Mean?: Explaining the Sermon on the Mount and the Parables in Simple and Universal Human Concepts"
Oxford University Press | 2001 | ISBN: 0195137329 | 528 pages | PDF | 8,5 MB

This interdisciplinary work aims to cast light on the words of Jesus by taking the author's semantic theory of "universal human concepts" - concepts which are intuitively understandable and self-explanatory across languages - and bringing it to bear on Jesus' parables and the Sermon on the Mount. Her approach results in novel interpretations of the Gospels.

Richard Ostling, Joan K. Ostling

Mormon America - Revised and Updated Edition: The Power and the Promise By Richard Ostling, Joan K. Ostling
Publisher: HarperOne 2007-10-01 | 496 Pages | ISBN: 0061432954 | PDF | 1.2 MB

Who Are the Mormons?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

Has over 12.5 million members worldwide and is one of the fastest-growing and most centrally controlled U.S.-based religions

Is by far the richest religion in the United States per capita, with $25 to $30 billion in estimated assets and $5 to $6 billion more in estimated annual income

Boasts such influential members as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and presidential candidate Mitt Romney

Mormon America: The Power and The Promise by Richard N. Ostling and Joan K. Ostling, grew out of a 1997 Time magazine cover story called "Mormon's Inc." One of the reporters on that story, Richard Ostling, became so fascinated by Mormonism that he set out to write "a candid but non-polemical" overview of the Church, beginning with its founding by Joseph Smith Jr. in 1830 and continuing to the present day. The resulting book is a marvel of clarity, organization, and analysis.

For statistical reasons alone, the Mormon Church demands a reader's attention: in just 170 years, the Church has grown from six members to more than 10 million; if current rates of growth continue, membership could hit 265 million by 2080, which would make it the most important world religion to emerge since the rise of Islam. Mormon America clarifies the reasons for the religion's rapid growth: "It was from the beginning optimistic and upbeat, a reaction against the establishment New England Calvinism.... It was a religious version of the American dream: Everyman presented with unlimited potential." The book also investigates the Mormons' immense wealth (relative to size, this is "America's richest church, with an estimated $30 billion in assets and something like $6 billion in annual income, mostly from members' tithes.") It anatomizes the minutiae of Church governance (Mormonism is ruled by a self-perpetuating, all-male hierarchy, headed by a "President, Prophet, Seer, and Revelator"), details the many rules that govern the Mormon lifestyle (famously, they avoid caffeine and alcohol; the Church's mandates extend even to the proper technique for "dispos[ing] of worn-out holy underwear"), and summarizes the Mormon scriptures. Mormon America is a compulsively readable book, not only for its insightful analysis and wealth of factual information, but also, and most importantly, because it respects its subject rigorously. "This is a real faith," the Ostlings write, "and must be understood in those terms, without caricature." --Michael Joseph Gross

Brian Hebblethwaite

Brian Hebblethwaite, "In Defence of Christianity "
Oxford University Press | 2005 | ISBN: 019927679X | 200 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

In Defence of Christianity is a short book of Christian apologetics. Acknowledging that reason is not the basis of faith, Brian Hebblethwaite sets out some of the main reasons that can be advanced in support of the Christian faith. He defends the view that belief in God makes most sense of a world that has come up with moral and creative persons and communities, including all that they have produced in the way of culture, mysticism, and sainthood. He also argues that the history of religions, and in particular the history of Israel and the story of Christ and his Church, offers the best diagnosis and solution of the problems that afflict humanity and the most hopeful picture of the ultimate future of creation.

The Born Again Skeptics Guide to the Bible

Suppose you had never heard of Christianity, and that next Sunday morning a stranger standing in a pulpit told you about a book whose authors could not be authenticated and whose contents, written hundreds of years ago, included blood-curling legends of slaughter and intrigue and fables about unnatural happenings such as virgin births, devils that inhabit human bodies and talk, people rising from the dead and ascending live into the clouds, and suns that stand still. Suppose he then asked you to believe that an uneducated man described in that book was a god who could get you into an eternal fantasy-place called Heaven, when you die. Would you, as an intelligent rational person, even bother to read such nonsense, let alone pattern your entire life upon it. --- from book's first page

Tracy Pintchman, "Women's Lives, Women's Rituals in the Hindu Tradition"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2007 | ISBN: 0195177061, 019517707X | 224 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

In this book, Tracy Pintchman has assembled ten leading scholars of Hinduism to explore the complex relationship between Hindu women's rituals and their lives beyond ritual. The book focuses particularly on the relationship of women's ritual practices to domesticity, exposing and exploring the nuances, complexities, and limits of this relationship. In many cultural and historical contexts, including contemporary India, women's everyday lives tend to revolve heavily around domestic and interpersonal concerns, especially care for children, the home, husbands, and other relatives. Hence, women's religiosity also tends to emphasize the domestic realm and the relationships most central to women. But women's religious concerns certainly extend beyond domesticity. Furthermore, even the domestic religious activities that Hindu women perform may not merely replicate or affirm traditionally formulated domestic ideals but may function strategically to reconfigure, reinterpret, criticize, or even reject such ideals.
This volume takes a fresh look at issues of the relationship between Hindu women's ritual practices and normative domesticity. In so doing, it emphasizes female innovation and agency in constituting and transforming both ritual and the domestic realm and calls attention to the limitations of normative domesticity as a category relevant to many forms of Hindu women's religious practice.

The Fragile Absolute: Or, Why the Christian Legacy is Worth Fighting For

Slavoj Zizek "The Fragile Absolute: Or, Why the Christian Legacy is Worth Fighting For"
Verso Books | 2000-04 | ISBN: 1859847706 | 192 pages | PDF | 6.6 MB

'From now on, even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!' Saint Paul's militant declaration from Corinthians asserts for the first time in human history the revolutionary logic of a radical break with the past--with it, the age of Cosmic Balance and similar pagan babble is over. What does it mean to return to this stance today? One of the most deplorable aspects of our postmodern era is the re-emergence of the "sacred" in all its different guises, from New Age paganism to the emerging religious sensitivity within deconstructionism itself. How is a Marxist to counter this massive onslaught of obscurantism? The wager of Zizek's The Fragile Absolute is that Christianity and Marxism should fight together against the onslaught of new spiritualism. The subversive core of the Christian legacy is much too precious to be left to the fundamentalists. Here is a fitting contribution from a Marxist to the 2000th anniversary of one who was well aware that to practice love in our world is to bring in the sword and fire.

True religion is the practice of the presence of God in one’s life. There is no greater demonstration of faith than a man who walks with God in the good times and even in the bad times; a man tempered by trials, strengthened by His grace and devoted to humility. But what happens when religion has become a by word for an institution rather than a walk of faith or a pilgrimage with God? In this book

Sex and Religion
It is my hope that this booklet may be of use to all parents and teachers whatever their religion or lack of it may be, whatever their country or social tradition. There are those who maintain that instruction in sex matters should be entirely divorced from religion. Religions, however, date from ancient days. Nearly every religion concerns itself with sex, and religious views cannot summarily be disentangled from the social consciousness on sex matters, even if it were ultimately possible to do so. But is it possible or right entirely to dissociate religion and sex ? I think not. My reason for this view I give on p. 8.
Religion, as most of us know it, is presented to us with outward trappings, which though non-essential appear essential to the uncritical mind. These outward trappings vary widely even among different sects of the same religion.

Counseling and Psychotherapy With Religious Persons: A Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Approach (Personality & Clinical Psychology)
Publisher: Lawrence Erlbaum | ISBN: 0805828788 | edition 2001 | PDF | 304 pages | 5,16 mb

Practitioners are increasingly aware that religious persons present unique problems and challenges in therapy. Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is among the most widely practiced, highly structured and active directive approaches to treating emotional and behavioral problems. Introduced by Albert Ellis in the early 1950s, REBT is the original cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and its efficacy has been supported by hundreds of treatment outcome studies.
A uniquely belief-focused therapy, REBT is usually quite appealing to clients from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and other religious traditions, who respond favorably to REBT's focus on right belief, active engagement in the work of therapy, and reading/practice focused homework.
In this practical and user-friendly guide, the authors outline the congruence between the therapeutic approach of REBT and the presenting problems and concerns of religious persons. They describe an approach to reconciling the sacred traditions and beliefs of religious clients with the no nonsense techniques of REBT. They review the essential components of practice with religious clients--including assessment, diagnosis and problem formulation, disputation of irrational beliefs, and other REBT techniques, highlight the primary obstacles facing the therapist when treating religious clients, and offer many case examples from work with this important client population.
Mental health professionals from all backgrounds will benefit from the detailed yet manual-focused approach to helping religious clients overcome all forms of emotional distress.

David was a very special man, he was God’s chosen king. He wrote most of the Psalms at this time and God called him, "a man after My own heart."
Like Jesus, David was from Bethlehem. He grew up as a shepherd and was skillful in music and courageous. Samuel the prophet secretly anointed him as king and God openly showed Israel His chosen by his single-handedly slaying of the giant, Goliath of Gath.

ments to Novum Testamentum for accepting this study for publication. Any work such as this takes place in a web of social relationships that shape the thinking of the author. I owe special thanks to my teachers, Hans Dieter Betz, Adela Yarbro Collins, and Arthur Droge. Their perceptive criticisms, careful scholarship, and support made this volume possble. I also wish to extend thanks to D. Dale Walker and Matt Jackson-McCabe, colleagues with whom I have engaged in many a profitable conversation about Christian origins. The University of Iowa School of Religion generously supplied the resources for Travis Voth to help proofread the manuscript and compile the index. I am grateful for his assistance.

The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible

David M. Carr, "The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2005 | ISBN: 019518162X, 0195156528 | 224 pages | PDF | 10,5 MB

Review
"In The Erotic Word, David Carr shows us how we can read the Bible as literature meant to challenge and empower us. He combines close reading, cultural and historical contexts, and apt personal observations to illuminate the text. Carr's meditations on the human condition, with a special focus on sexuality, spirituality, love, desire, marriage, divorce, and gender relationships, are truly engaging. His writing brings together a community of scholars, writers, artists, teachers and readers-as well as what he has learned from his own family, friends, and students. This book has much to teach us about how to read, love, and live fully in the world."--Kyoko Mori, author of Stone Field, True Arrow and Polite Lies: On Being a Woman Caught Between Cultures

"The Erotic Word is honest, accessible, and always thought-provoking. Carr is clear that there is no one biblical view of sexuality, but he makes a compelling case that the Bible can be read to embrace sexual eros as well as to give us insights into love gone awry."--Judith Plaskow, author of Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective

"A wonderfully fresh, intelligent, and delightful resource for those who seek to make connections in Hebrew Scripture between erotic power and divine life, patriarchal structures and the struggles for liberation. The Sacred whispers through these pages!"--Carter Heyward, Episcopal Divinity School

"This is a lucid, fresh, and learned study of the Bible's complex views of sexuality and their impact on later readers. The description of eroticism and spirituality in the Bible and beyond is rich and subtle. While writing from a Christian perspective, Carr reads Scripture with an honesty and intensity that will engage readers outside his faith community as well."--Michael V. Fox, Halls-Bascom Professor of Hebrew,University of Wisconsin-Madison, and author of The Song of Songs and the Ancient Egyptian Love Songs

"An excellent book on an important topic-a remarkable combination of readability and scholarship, sexuality and spirituality."--Marcus J. Borg, author of Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time and Reading the Bible Again for the First Time

Product Description
Historically, the Bible has been used to drive a wedge between the spirit and the body. In this provocative book, David Carr argues that the Bible affirms erotic passion. Sexuality and spirituality, he contends, are intricately interwoven; the journey toward God and the life-long engagement with our own sexual embodiment are inseparable.

The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity

James D. Tabor, "The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity"
Simon & Schuster | 2006-04-04 | ISBN: 0743287231 | 384 pages | PDF | 54 MB

The Jesus Dynasty offers a startling new interpretation of the life of Jesus and the origins of Christianity that is grounded in careful analysis of the earliest Christian documents and recent archaeological discoveries, including the much-discussed "Jesus family tomb."

In The Jesus Dynasty, biblical scholar James Tabor brings us closer than ever to the historical Jesus. He explains the crucial relationship between Jesus, a royal descendant of David, and his relative John the Baptizer, a priestly descendant of Aaron and Jesus' teacher. When John was killed, several of his followers -- including Jesus' four brothers -- joined with Jesus, who continued John's mission, preaching the same apocalyptic message. After Jesus confronted the Roman authorities in Jerusalem and was crucified, his brother James succeeded him as the leader of the Jesus dynasty.

James Tabor has studied the earliest surviving documents of Christianity for more than thirty years and has participated in important archaeological excavations in Israel. His reconstruction of the life of Jesus and his followers, and of the early years of Christianity, will change our understanding of one of the most crucial moments in history.

Enjoy this great book!

This is the first book in this age to preach the gospel of the baptism and the blood of Jesus as it is written in the Scriptures. The true gospel clearly tells us that He took away all our sins through His baptism and took over judgment for all our sins on the Cross. I am sure that there is no other book that preaches ‘the gospel of the water and the blood’ more clearly and faithfully than this one. The Samaritan woman who drank from the well of Jacob everyday couldn’t quench her spiritual thirst, but when she drank the water of life from Jesus, she earned salvation and thus, quenched her thirst immediately and forever.

All of humankind must be born again. We have to be born again through our faiths, be redeemed from all our sins and become righteous. For only then can we enter the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. The Bible says, "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). "To be born again of water and the Spirit" is the only way we can enter the eternal Kingdom of God.

What, then, is this ‘water’ and ‘the Spirit’ that allows us to be born again? The ‘water’ in the Bible refers to ‘the baptism of Jesus.’

Why was Jesus, who is God, baptized by John the Baptist? Was it to show His humility? Was it to proclaim Himself the Messiah? No, it wasn’t.

When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist by means of ‘the laying on of hands’ (Leviticus 16:21), it was ‘one Man’s righteous act’ (Romans 5:18), which took away all the sins of humankind.

In the Old Testament, God gave Israel the merciful law of redemption. This was so that on the Day of Atonement, all the sins of Israel for that year could be expiated through the High Priest, Aaron, by laying his hands on the head of the ‘scapegoat’ and passing all the sins onto that scapegoat.

These were the words of revelation, which foretold the sacrifice of eternal atonement. It revealed the truth that all the sins of humanity would be passed onto Jesus all at once, who came in the flesh of a man, according to the will of the Father. And He was baptized by John the Baptist who was the descendant of Aaron and the representative of all humankind.

When Jesus was baptized, He said to John, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15).

Here, ‘for thus’ means ‘by the laying on of hands,’ in order to pass all the sins of the world onto Jesus, so that all righteousness might be fulfilled for all of us. The word ‘righteousness’ is ‘dikaiosune’ in Greek, and its meaning is "the fairest state" or "to be just in character or deeds with the implication of being righteous or fitting."

Jesus had fulfilled all righteousness for all people through His baptism in a just and fitting manner. Because Jesus took on all the sins of people through His baptism, the next day, John the Baptist testified, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

With all the sins of humankind on His shoulders, Jesus walked toward the Cross. He vicariously took the judgment for all the sins He had taken on Himself through His baptism. He died on the Cross, saying, "It is finished" (John 19:30). He took all our sins onto Himself and received the complete judgment for them in our place.

This one book will surely quench your spiritual thirst forever and ever.

Steve Harvey

Steve Harvey, Denene Millner, "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment"
Amistad | 2009 | ISBN: 0061728977 | 240 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years, whether it's through the "Strawberry Letters" segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. These are women who can run a small business, keep a household with three kids in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds lights on concepts and questions such as:

—The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man?

—How to spot a mama's boy and what if anything you can do about it.

—When to introduce the kids. And what to read into the first interaction between your date and your kids.

—The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is.

— And more...

Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.
